Into the Blue is a powerful short documentary by Richard Flack that traces the fragile future of one of South Africa’s rarest birds, the Blue Swallow. What began as a simple day of filming at Roselands Nature Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal evolved into an 18-month, no-budget project driven by passion, persistence and a shared urgency to tell an untold story.
With fewer than 25 breeding pairs remaining in the country, the film follows the efforts of a small group of dedicated conservationists working to protect both the swallows and their threatened mistbelt grassland habitat. Along the way, it reveals how community action, photography and grassroots conservation helped sustain a struggling conservation centre during the Covid-19 pandemic, while also raising awareness for a species on the brink.
Blending intimate field moments with expert insight, Into the Blue explores not only the beauty and behaviour of these aerial specialists, but also the uncertainty surrounding their decline. At its heart, it is a story of collaboration, hope and the people fighting quietly to ensure that the Blue Swallow does not disappear from South Africa’s skies.
