Calling all bird-enthusiasts, nature-lovers and friendly competitive teams: this year (on 6 December 2025) the team at BirdLife South Africa are once again calling you to take part in their annual Birding Big Day. It’s simple: register your team, pick your patch (either a 50 km radius or a more relaxed 6 km radius), get out into the field, log your sightings, and help celebrate South Africa’s incredible avian wealth.
And the excitement doesn’t stop with simply spotting birds. Everyone who registers gets the chance to enter the Lucky Draw and one lucky team (or individual) will win a four-night stay for four people at the stunning Pafuri Camp in the far north of the Kruger National Park, sponsored by RETURN Africa. The prize is valued at R64 000.
It’s fun, it’s purposeful (every sighting supports bird‐conservation efforts) and it’s open to individuals or teams. Registration is free—just complete the online form and consider making a donation if you are able.
Why you should join:
- It’s a great excuse to get out into nature, walk, listen and look for birds (which I know you love!).
- You’ll be part of a nationwide event, contributing data to BirdLife South Africa’s science and innovation programme.
- There’s the thrill of competition (meeting the challenge of the day) plus the chance to win an amazing prize.
- Whether you’re in a big team or prefer solo or duo birding, you can choose your category and enjoy the day at your own pace.
So get your team name ready, download the BirdLasser app (if you’ll log sightings via app), and set your birding challenge.
